アーネスト・ゲルナー（ErnestGellner, 1925年12月9日-1995年11月5日）は、歴史学者、哲学者、社会人類学者。ナショナリズムの研究で有名。
来歴・人物
| パリでユダヤ人の家族に生まれる。 |
| 生誕後、すぐにプラハに移り、そこで育つ。 |
| 1939年、家族とともにイギリスに亡命。 |
| これは、前年1938年のミュンヘン協定により、ズデーテンがドイツに割譲され、ナチス・ドイツのものになったためである。 |
| 1945～46年にかけて短期間プラハに戻り、カレル大学で学ぶ。 |
| ここで、フッサールの弟子でもあったヤン・パトチカの指導を受ける。 |
| パトチカは東側世界に残った数少ないフッサール門下生のひとりであった。 |
| イギリスに戻るとオックスフォード大学で社会人類学を学ぶとともに、ロンドン・スクール・オブ・エコノミクスで政治学も勉強した。 |
| エディンバラ大学、ロンドン・スクール・オブ・エコノミクス、ケンブリッジ大学で教鞭をとり、1993年からプラハにある中央ヨーロッパ大学ナショナリズム研究センター所長として研究を続けた。 |
| 『民族とナショナリズム』は、産業社会の勃興と国民形成の関連性を指摘し、ベネディクト・アンダーソン『想像の共同体』やエリック・ホブズボームほか編『伝統の創造』と並んで、ナショナリズム研究における近代主義アプローチを代表する著作として知られる。 |
| ロンドン・スクール・オブ・エコノミクス時代の教え子であるアントニー・D・スミスの博士論文は、『民族とナショナリズム』に対する反駁でもあった。 |
